‘Everyone wants to be warm’: MSCS’s clothing drive helps thousands of students with winter essentials

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The generosity of the Mid-South is once again ensuring that kids stay warm this winter.

Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) held its annual Operation Warm Hearts winter clothing drive Tuesday.

Coats, hats, gloves and so much more were all donated to help keep thousands of MSCS students warm.

“Everyone wants to be warm, especially when these temperatures start to drop,” said Erin Luster, MSCS’s community engagement manager.

But when the weather gets cold, not everyone can afford to bundle up.

Dozens drove by MSCS headquarters on Tuesday to drop off coats and other winter accessories.

The school district said it has about 3,000 students who are experiencing homelessness, and even more simply in need of a boost.

Every year, the event raises about $30,000 in clothing and monetary donations. That equates to a savings of about $30 each coat.

The school district will give out the items collected throughout the year as they identify need.

If you missed the donation drive, you can still give a monetary donation here.
