Grizzlies host fourth annual “Grizz Shop Local” to support small businesses

By Griffin DeMarrais

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Small Business Saturday is one of the most important days of the year for business owners around the country and on Saturday the Grizzlies teamed up with all different kinds of vendors to help them cash in.

The Grizz Shop Local event allowed people to sell their items in the main entrance of the FedEx Forum and for vendors days like this are huge for their bottom line.

Mary Cooper owns her own soap and oil company and said days like this help get their name out.

“Well, it is good because it exposes us to all the local people who have not heard of our company,” Cooper said.

Kendall Phillips owns a coin and silver shop and said in today’s world it can be tough to keep the doors open but events like this keep them afloat.

“You know getting a small business off the ground takes a lot of work so an outlet like this to really meet people and interact with other small businesses and work together and grow together is really cool,” Phillips said.

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, since 2010 consumers have spent an estimated $201 billion dollars at small businesses on Small Business Saturday.

Phillips stressed that the biggest part of these events is making those connections that go a long way toward increasing revenue.

“I have enjoyed meeting people and seeing the different businesses that we have in the city that I was not aware of,” Phillips said. “Getting that face-to-face interaction is huge for us.”
