MEMPHIS, Tenn. — On Veterans Day, Memphis is honoring its heroes with different events throughout the city.
American Legion Post 27 hosted its annual Veterans Day Parade starting at Second Street and Exchange.
It featured high school bands, dance teams, civic groups, and VA corvettes symbolizing veterans of wars. The Grand Marshal married to a veteran for over 40 years, led the procession.
“You name it, there’s an organization for everything that is here to celebrate the veterans just to say thank you for what they have done for us,” said Nancy Harper, coordinator.
Harper is a 24-year retired veteran.
“I’ve been doing this for twenty years, working with the parade committee, and I get excited because the veterans didn’t have to do what they did,” Harper said. After Vietnam, it became a volunteer army, and I volunteered. I went to the army because I wanted to. I enjoyed being with fellow soldiers and now I enjoy taking care of veterans now that I’m out.”
In Bartlett, a simultaneous event honored veterans. At Veterans Park, adjacent to W.J. Freeman Park, there was a ceremony under the A. Keith McDonald Pavilion. To honor veterans, people purchased bricks for the memorial. The ceremony included a wreath laying at the monument.
9 Great Clips salons in the Memphis area including Oxford, MS, Dyersburg, TN, and Olive Branch will be running their annual promotion at Great Clips that provides active and retired military with free haircuts on and after Veterans Day.
