MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Memphis Shelby Crime Commission has released new data that shows that guns were used more in violent crimes during the first months of 2025 compared to the same time last year.
The commission cites numbers coming from the Memphis Police Department.
They examine reports of violent crime involving guns from January to March of 2025 compared to the same period of 2024.

While the number of violent crimes involving guns alone dropped by 8.6% from last year, when looking at all reports of violence in Memphis during this period—including but not limited to homicide, aggravated assault, rape, and domestic violence—more of these crimes involved guns this year compared to last.
In the first quarter of 2024, 70.1% of all violent crime involved firearms.
In the same months of 2025, 72.4% of all violent crime involved firearms—a 2.3% increase.
Numbers were also released on domestic violence incidents specifically.
Guns were involved in 50.8% of domestic violence incidents last year. This year, that number rose to 54.8%—a 4% increase.

The Memphis Shelby Crime Commission also provided data on the number of times guns were reported stolen from cars.
According to that data, there was a 12.4% drop in reports of firearms taken from vehicles in the first quarter of this year compared to last year.

It’s worth noting that reported crimes do not equal the actual number of crimes committed.
