MPD: Man dies after ‘medical emergency’ while in police custody, TBI investigating

Officers responded to a disturbance call on Tuesday, Feb. 4, just before 2 a.m. in the 1600 block of Rayner Street.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is dead after Memphis police said he experienced a medical emergency while in officers’ custody early Tuesday.

Officers responded to a disturbance call on Feb. 4 just before 2 a.m. in the 1600 block of Rayner Street, where they arrested a man. Shortly after, he had a medical emergency and officers gave aid, according to the police report.

He was taken Methodist University in critical condition and later died. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has been called to investigate.

A TBI spokesperson released the following statement: “On Tuesday, February 4th, at the request of the 30th Judicial District Deputy District Attorney Paul Hagerman, TBI agents began investigating the circumstances leading to the in-custody death of a man in the 1600 block of Rayner street in Memphis. At this time, the investigation remains active and ongoing.”

The following day, TBI officials identified the man who died as 54-year-old Rinaldo D. Bankston.

MPD officials also said officers are investigating a kidnapping allegation involving the suspect and a female victim.
