MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The UT Health Science Center remembered a medical student after her untimely death over the weekend as her suspected killer is being held in jail without bond.

“Due to the severity of this case, our office has requested that no bond be granted pending a hearing,” District Attorney Steve Mulroy said in a statement. “The murder of Ellie Young at Shelby Farms Park is a heartbreaking tragedy, and my deepest condolences go out to her family and friends.”

Memphis Police say that Ellie Young was shot at the Breast Cancer Walk over the weekend at Shelby Farms Park.

Young’s ex-boyfriend, 26-year-old Jackson Hopper, has been charged with her murder. On Monday, he appeared before a judge and is being held without bond.

Young was described as a kind, smart and genuine role model, Young’s family, sorority sisters and UTHSC classmates are mourning her loss.

Witnesses in the area of the shooting said that it was packed with families for a Breast Cancer Walk.

“I was walking towards my car and the young lady was getting in her Jeep and a man came in a white car and shot her twice,” eyewitness Monica Bell said.

The sound of gunfire sent everyone running for safety.

“They said a man just shot someone,” eyewitness Janet Jackson said. “I was thinking of all the babies. There were babies out there.”

Officials say that he led law enforcement on a multi-county chase before crashing in Dyer County following the shooting.

Video obtained by WREG showed his arrest on Highway 51 and officers punching him as he exited his overturned vehicle.
