University of Memphis launches University Crime Information Center

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A new investment by the University of Memphis looks to give students and parents a sense of comfort at school.
The school recently introduced a University Crime Information Center (UCIC) that will bring them to the forefront when it comes to campus safety.
“So, this is a game-changer for the university and university community,” Keith Humphrey said.
Humphrey was hired in February as the chief of police at the University of Memphis, and he said this really expands their operation.
“This gives us an opportunity to have a wider view of our campuses in real time,” Humphrey said.
The UCIC will allow campus police to have enhanced search capabilities; they can send out suspicious activity alerts and provide virtual escorting.
The escorting gives them the ability to follow a person across the entire campus while they walk home, which goes hand in hand with their Tiger Walk program.
“We can actually monitor someone leaving a location and monitor them until they get to the location they were scheduled to be at; we call it a virtual escort, so that is a game-changer for us,” Humphrey said.
With 1,200 cameras on campus, this will allow them to be both reactive and proactive when it comes to a lot of the petty crimes that are seen on campus.
Humphrey stressed a college campus has over 20,000 people on it at all times, and that is key to always knowing what is going on.
“We can do more in making sure that our students, faculty and staff are safe, and we can also do more to recognize those individuals that are causing crime,” Humphrey said.
Humphrey said they are looking for more security officers to watch over the system around the clock; if you are interested, contact the University of Memphis Police.
