Winter storm to bring snow to the Memphis area on Friday

 Kit Thomas

Snow accumulations appear likely in the Mid-South Thursday night and Friday.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A winter storm will likely bring accumulating snow to the Mid-South, including Memphis, on Friday, January 10.

As cold air settles into the area through this week, meteorologists are tracking a storm system that will likely bring wintry weather to the Mid-South starting Thursday night and continuing into Friday. Since temperatures will already be near freezing, most of this will likely fall as snow, but a wintry mix of snow, rain, and sleet is possible in parts of North Mississippi.

The ABC24 Weather Team has declared a Weather Impact Day for Friday in the Memphis area, due to the threat of snow accumulation impacting travel.

How much snow will we see?

In general, most areas in West Tennessee, East Arkansas, and North Mississippi can expect anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of snow. There will be a heavier band of snow that will likely set up along or just south of Interstate 40 where some areas could see 7 inches of snow.

We are expecting a range of snow around the area from 2″ to over 6″ in isolated spots. Travel will be very difficult on Friday during the snow storm.

When will the snow start?

Snow showers will likely start in the Memphis area Thursday night after 10 p.m., with snow continuing most of the day Friday. Most of the snow will end by 10 p.m. Friday evening. The heaviest snow is likely between 6 a.m. and 12 p.m. Friday.

When will travel be impacted?

Road conditions will start to get slick by 3 a.m. Friday and will likely stay rough through most of the day. Roads might not improve much through the weekend with temperatures falling back below freezing each night. This will result in some melting and re-freezing for Saturday and Sunday. Drivers should plan to stay off the roads all day Friday if possible, and use extreme caution if they have to be out this weekend.
