Young Dolph Day urges public service: ‘He was more than just a rapper’

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Sunday marks three years since the tragic death of Memphis rapper Young Dolph. Over the weekend, people came together to honor the rapper’s legacy and what many say he was known for outside his successful rap career.
And that having a heart to give back.
Put on by Dolph’s IdaMae Family Foundation and his label Paper Route Empire (PRE), the event urged the community to give back in the spirit of the late rapper.
“He was more than just a rapper,” comedian and PRE affiliate Grove Hero told FOX13.
Many call him a philanthropist, a man of the people and a friend. These are just some of the characteristics fans, his artists and his family remember about the iconic artist.
“He was just a real friend and a real mentor, a good person,” Grove Hero said.
“The things that he enjoyed the most was giving back and making people smile and just having some hope in their life,” Young Dolph’s sister Carlisa Brown told FOX13 Saturday.
Now the rapper’s giving spirit is being honored.
“Golf for Dolph” got underway Saturday at Topgolf Memphis.
It’s part of a weekend of activities motivating others to pay-it-forward just like Dolph did. Guests were asked to take books and toys to donate in time for the holidays.
“Today is all about giving back, helping someone in need and helping those families that need the assistance,” said Brown.
“What’s the purpose in having money?” Grove Hero asked. “Just to buy a bunch of material stuff and stunt on people and look down on people? It’s always good to help and come together.”
Justin Johnson was recently found guilty of first-degree murder, given a life sentence and additional years in the shooting death of Young Dolph. The rapper’s life was cut short on Nov. 17, 2021, in his own hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.
“It was hard to believe it was true when it happened,” said Memphis Mayor Paul Young. “Our goal is to honor his legacy in his passing and just remember what he contributed to this community.”
Saturday’s goal was to provide Christmas gifts for 150 children. The gifts will be given out on Dec. 7.
Sunday, Nov. 17 officially marks Adolph “Young Dolph” Thornton Jr. Day of Service in Tennessee and Georgia. In honor of the celebration, the IdaMae Family Foundation will host a community resource fair and food giveaway at Dolph’s alma mater, Hamilton High School, from noon-3 p.m.
A separate Dolph Day of Service event will get underway at the Hospitality Hub at 590 Washington Avenue from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Free food and haircuts will be offered.
