by: David Royer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Mickell Lowery will be the next Shelby County mayor, according to early and incomplete election returns.
With 88% of the results returned Thursday night, Lowery, the Democratic nominee, was headed to victory with 65% of the vote over Republican John DeBerry.
DeBerry congratulated Lowery on the win shortly after 10 Thursday night.
“I would like to congratulate Mayor-Elect Lowery, and I wish him well,” DeBerry said.
Lowery is a Shelby County commissioner. He was first elected to the County Commission back in 2018 and is the son of the late Memphis City Councilman Myron Lowery.
DeBerry is a longtime state legislator who had previously been a Democrat.
