DOGE cuts federal leases in Mid-South, claims $1.2M savings
by: David Royer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Department of Government Efficiency says it is terminating real estate contracts for at least five federal offices in Memphis, Collierville, and Oxford, Mississippi.
The cuts will lead to a total savings of $1,222,284, DOGE says on its website‘s “wall of receipts.” Among the local offices affected:
- Food and Drug Administration office in Memphis, total savings: $701,149
- USDA National Appeals Division office in Memphis, total savings: $354,188
- Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service in Collierville, total savings: $137,149
- U.S. Marshals Service in Oxford, total savings: $16,149
- Internal Revenue Service in Oxford, total savings: $13,649
The Marshals Service office in Oxford and mediation service in Collierville are being closed, a “true termination,” the website says. Other office leases are listed as “Terminated via Mass Mod” with no explanation.
DOGE, a federal advisory body headed by Trump advisor and billionaire Elon Musk, claims it is saving taxpayers $105 billion through cuts to grants, contracts, and the federal workforce.
Critics have raised questions about the accuracy of that estimate, as well as the impact of the cuts on government functions.
