MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The company Fresh Start lost its contract with the Memphis-Shelby County School District (MSCS) and more than 250 employees will lose their jobs as a result, according to Fresh Start.
The company supplied mainly janitorial employees for MSCS. FOX13 reported on at least two previous incidents where disputes between Fresh Start and MSCS caused those employees to go weeks without paychecks.
Fresh Start filed a WARN notice with the Tennessee Department of Labor, announcing the upcoming layoffs. The WARN notice mentions the company’s “permanent closure on October 31, 2024,” but Fresh Start told FOX13 that it’s non-MSCS employees in Memphis will not be affected and that the company is not permanently closing. That WARN notice states that 256 works are affected.
Fresh Start’s employees at MSCS saw delayed payments in October. The cleaning service told FOX13 that was due to a lengthy review of their invoice by MSCS.
Back in June, employees complained of not being paid for nearly a month. Fresh Start acknowledged and accepted responsibility for those delayed payments.
