Organizers hope Bike-To-Work Day sparks more interest in healthy activities

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Health advocates in Shelby County have designated today, May 20th, for a community Bike-To-Work Day.
The campaign is part of a national one that lasts through the month.
Originally scheduled but postponed last week due to rainfall, the local promotion where bikers are encouraged to later congregate in one spot, starts at noon at 814 Jefferson Ave, where there will be a ribbon cutting for Explore Bike Share’s e-bike station.
Before then, bikers this morning may pedal by the Shelby County Commission building Downtown (114 N Main Street) and receive free breakfast from 7:30 until 9:30.
There, bikers will also be able to sign up in a raffle for the prize of a 3-day pass for the e-bike share.
The promotion is part of the Memphis Medical District Collaborative, a community development organization working with other institutions like the Shelby County Health Department to strengthen communities.
“Cycling is an environmentally friendly way to travel, and a great form of aerobic exercise,” said Dr. Michelle Taylor, Director of the Shelby County Health Department. “Regular cycling strengthens the cardiovascular system, promotes balance and coordination, increases muscle strength and flexibility, and reduces stress.”
