Penny Hardaway among nominees for Hall of Fame Class of 2024

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A 10-2 record to start the season and a #19 national ranking for the University of Memphis Men’s Basketball program isn’t the only thing Head Coach Penny Hardaway is celebrating to end 2023.

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced on Friday that Hardaway is among a list of nominees that could be inducted into the basketball shrine in 2024.

Hardaway and the late Walter Davis were added to the list of first-time candidates.

After being selected with the third overall pick of the 1993 NBA Draft, Memphis’ own played for the Magic, Suns, Knicks and Heat throughout his 14-year NBA playing career.

At the end of his 704 games in the pros, Hardaway averaged 15.2 points, five assists and 4.5 rebounds per game while being named an NBA All-Star four times and All-NBA First Team twice.

Of course, life-long Memphis fans will be even more familiar with his time on the court with the Tigers where Hardaway averaged 20 points, 7.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game over 66 games.

Finalists from the Honor’s Committee for the Class of 2024 will be announced on Friday, February 16 in Indianapolis, Indiana during NBA All-Star Weekend and the entire Class of 2024 will be announced during the NCAA Final Four in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday, April 6.

Other notable first-time nominees for the Class of 2024 include the 2008 U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Team, Vince Carter, Seimone Augustus, Bill Laimbeer, Rick Barnes, Mike Fratello and Penny Taylor.
