Salary for new MSCS superintendent announced

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The salary for the new Memphis Shelby County Schools superintendent was announced on Tuesday at a board meeting.

Dr. Marie Feagins salary will be $325K, exceeding the interim superintendent salary, Toni Williams, which was $310K, officials said.

“In the past When the teachers got a raise, they got that 5%. So that was removed from this contract. We took time to go back to review  contracts and we did some things. I think they were just kind of being carried over from contract. We wanted to make sure this time that we spent time on it, make sure we cleaned it out,” Chairwoman Al Green said.

Before her contract was unanimously agreed, Dr. Feagins was already making $1K a week after the board voted to make her the new superintendent.

Feagins was elected superintendent with six votes in the second round of voting. All votes were later changed to unanimously support Dr. Feagins.

Feagins began as a teacher in Jefferson County, AL, in 2006.

She worked her way up into school administration in several districts in Alabama and then became a principal in Cleveland, OH, in 2017.

She moved to her current employer in Detroit Public Schools in 2021.

In her previous experience, all of the districts are much smaller than Memphis-Shelby County Schools.
