MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A security guard at a Binghamton apartment complex was arrested after police say he fired multiple shots at a man who was wanted on warrants.
According to reports, Memphis Police responded to the Chickasaw Place apartments at 2889 Mimosa Avenue in regards to a shooting call.
Officers spoke with security guard Rickey Hines Jr., who stated that he was working when Rico Coats tried to enter the apartment complex. He and the other security guard on duty checked Coats’ ID and found that he had warrants for his arrest.
MPD says Hines and the other security guard tried to open Coats’ car door to take him into custody, but he drove off into the apartment complex.
Hines told police that Coats then drove toward him in his truck like he was trying to hit him.
Reports say security footage shows Hines firing multiple shots into the driver’s side of Coats’ vehicle as he was driving away. He then fired two more shots as Coats tried to drive out of the complex.
Once Coats exited the complex, Hines allegedly continued firing multiple shots at him.
Coats was hit by the gunfire and was transported to Regional One in critical condition.
Rickey Hines, 30, was taken into custody and charged with Criminal Attempt Second Degree Murder, Possession of a Firearm During a Dangerous Felony, and Vandalism of Property $2,500-$10,000.
Rico Coats, 38, was also taken into custody on warrants, including one for auto theft in February 2021 when he allegedly stole his ex-girlfriend’s car from her driveway. Coats’ record showed multiple warrants from more than 15 prior cases, including domestic assault and an active case for theft of a motor vehicle in 2021.
He was charged with Theft of Property $2,500-$10,000 to wit: Auto Theft.
Bond for Coats and Hines has not been set, but they are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
We last spoke with Rickey Hines almost a month ago after shooters fired more than 100 shots in his direction. Now that same guard is facing charges along with the man who he tried to detain.
Alco Management, the security company for the complex, says they are cooperating with authorities, as Memphis police continue to investigate.
WREG obtained their security protocols and found serving warrants is nothing new. According to state law, they are authorized to detain individuals without outstanding warrants.
