Shelby Co. Juvenile Court sues sheriff’s office over driving young detainees to court

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Juvenile Court of Memphis and Shelby County has filed a lawsuit against the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office over the months-long youth detainee transportation dispute.
The filing was made in chancery court at the 11th hour of 2024. The writ of mandamus alleges SCSO has failed to perform its official duty to drive juvenile detainees to court.
The dispute came to a head in October when in-person hearings at the juvenile court were scheduled to resume after a long-time closure due to environmental concerns.
Prior to the shutdown, the sheriff’s office was responsible for driving juvenile suspects to court. But on October 14, an SCSO attorney sent a letter to the juvenile court saying the sheriff’s office would no longer drive offenders to the court on Adams Avenue.
Sheriff Floyd Bonner said this was because of staffing shortages and budget issues.
