MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A grandmother and grandson were carjacked at gunpoint at a Frayser apartment complex, and police say a 12-year-old and two 14-year-olds are in custody.
The frightening encounter happened right before the new year and in broad daylight, around 1:30 p.m.
Police say the trio of juveniles allegedly held up a grandmother, stealing her phone, keys, purse and her grandson’s phone before driving off in her 2018 Nissan Sentra.
The juveniles were tracked down in the stolen car after a drive-by shooting in South Memphis.
An hour later, officers say they responded to a shots fired call in the area of South Parkway and Riverside Boulevard.
The victim stated a male in a Nissan fired a shot at him before driving off.
Police say they spotted the Nissan at 3 p.m. in the area of Vance Avenue and South Lauderdale Street. When they tried to stop the vehicle, the driver refused and a chase was initiated.
One of the 14-year-old boys is charged with Aggravated Robbery, Carjacking, Employment of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, Aggravated Assault – Acting in Concert, Reckless Endangerment, and Evading Arrest on Foot.

Interim MPD Chief C.J. Davis tells WREG that kids as young as 10-year-old were arrested for crime in 2024.
“I see it as, adults are responsible for children and the police, it’s not our responsibility to maintain children at 2 a.m. or round them up,” she said. “We really want our adults parents to be more responsible for their kids and unfortunately that’s not the case in many instances.”
