TN remains one of least expensive states for average gas price: AAA reports

By:

TENNESSEE – The average price for gasoline at the pump rose, then fell last week.

The rise and fall followed five consecutive weeks of falling average cost in the Volunteer State, according to AAA.

In Memphis, the price per gallon last week calculated at $3.160 per gallon, compared to the average price one year ago when it was $3.402 per gallon.

Tennessee is ranked as the eighth-least expensive market in the nation. The national average for a gallon of gas declined by five cents to $3.49 since last week, while the cost of oil per barrel has remained steady in the mid-$80 range.

AAA says that the least-expensive metro markets in Tennessee are Nashville, Jackson and Morrison, while Chattanooga, Clarksville and Kingsport are the most expensive markets.

“We saw quite a bit of movement in pump pricing in some of our metro areas last week, which helped to push the state gas price average more expensive. From Monday to Wednesday last week, gas prices shot up five cents, on average, but by the weekend gas prices had dropped by another four cents,” said Megan Cooper, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group.

“If oil prices continue to move less expensive, drivers can likely expect to see pump prices continue to decline over this week.”
