MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A tow truck driver has been charged with theft of property for allegedly stealing an SUV parked outside a Fox Meadows gas station.
Police have not recovered the stolen Jeep Cherokee, which belonged to the son of the gas station owner. The vehicle is valued at around $40,000.
The alleged theft on November 11 at the Exxon in the 3500 block of Hickory Hill Road was captured on the store’s surveillance cameras.
According to police, the footage showed a black Dodge Ram tow truck and a Honda Pilot pulling onto the lot and two men hooking up a black Jeep Cherokee and hauling it away.
Investigators said they were able to obtain the Honda’s tag number and arrested the owner, Dabreon Woods, 29.
The driver of the tow truck, later identified as Torrence Jones, 31, told detectives an unknown person asked him to tow the Jeep to another location, but admitted he did not verify ownership of the Jeep Cherokee or contact MPD to notify them of the tow.
An Exxon employee said it took Jones and Woods nearly 20 minutes to take the Jeep. He said the pair returned the next day in the same tow truck and entered the store.
Jones and Woods were both charged with theft between $10,000 and $60,000. Woods was booked in the Shelby County Jail on Friday. Jones was booked on Nov. 14 and released on a $25,000 bond.
