MEMPHIS, Tenn — Two inmates at the county jail at 201 Poplar have died in the past two days, Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner said.
The first inmate, who was identified as Darian Nolen, 33, was taken to a hospital Thursday evening in non-critical condition for a change in mental status. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Records show he was jailed after allegedly damaging an MLGW vehicle in September of last year. He was charged with Assault and Vandalism.
The second inmate, who was identified as Darin Crawford, 57, was found unresponsive in a cell Friday morning.
Crawford was charged with four counts of assault on a first-responder after a barricade situation on Jan. 25.
This makes four inmate deaths at the jail in a week.
The sheriff’s office blamed the deaths in part on being short-staffed. Sheriff Bonner says they need 58 to 60 more officers at 201 Poplar.
SCSO says there are 2,540 detainees being held at the jail, 108 detainees in juvenile court, and 279 in jail east.
An inmate found dead in a cell on Friday died from an apparent drug overdose. The other inmate died Saturday from an apparent suicide.
The sheriff says they are launching an investigation and are waiting on the medical examiner to determine the cause of the most recent inmate deaths.
