“Walkin’ in Memphis” event supports local Down Syndrome Association
By:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The local Down Syndrome non-profit organization is holding its annual “Walkin’ in Memphis” event on March 21st, recognized as World Down Syndrome Day.
In its seventh year, the walk is a fundraiser with all of the proceeds helping the Down Syndrome Association of Memphis & the Mid-South, which offers programs to help individuals and families in the area.
Organizers hope to raise $21,000 from the walk.
The number 21 is a theme in the event’s date and financial goal, as it represents the extra 21 chromosome that’s found in persons with Down syndrome.
The walk begins at 6 p.m. at the Memphis/Arkansas Bridge – which will be lighted with the cause’s official blue and yellow colors – along Riverside Drive and ends at Beale St. Landing.
A celebration will be held for participants and the public.
The walk was inspired by a man named Josh Greer, whose daughter Marley has Down syndrome.
Greer walks continually for about 14 hours, and 21 miles, across the Mid-South, separately for the cause.
